Tot School 2

"The main part of intellectual education is not the acquisition of facts but learning how to make facts live." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes

Tot School created a lot of excitement last week. The boys were anxious to see what I had been cutting out and coloring. Envelopes are a favorite "toy" in our house. They were amazed that I had made an envelope! So when you combine Tot Time and envelopes you are asking for FUN!

We started by organizing Unifix Cubes from smallest to tallest. Then, the boys worked on sorting dinosaurs and apples from smallest to largest. Now, please don't think that I created these cool dinosaurs and apples. They were compliments of a great website called www.filefolderfun.com. If time allowed we would have found household objects and sorted them, too. But Grandma arrived with Starbucks, so Tot Time ended ended in our Coffee Time tradition!

Tot School

I am a teacher.

Everyone is, really.

I never thought I would be a teacher, but I became a teacher. In middle school, I thought for sure that I would be a pilot in the Air Force because not many girls aspired to this dream. In high school, I decided that I would become a doctor. But, they have to go to school a long time. (I also fainted watching someone get a spinal tap.) So, I decided to become a physical therapist. It was predicted that there would be a shortage of therapist due to the rapidly aging Baby Boomers (sorry Mom and Dad). However, volunteering at the local physical therapy hospital wasn't exactly fun.

I went to college anyway. Thanks Mom and Dad! My education prepared me for the most important work of my life.

Well, Jesus happened and Chemistry didn't that freshman year of college. I left school jaded by a large school setting and looked forward to a bright future in accounting at a small college deeper in the Bible Belt.
But God had plans other than accounting for me. I read a book called, In His Steps by Charles Sheldon, which is the reason people wear those popular WWJD bracelets. I thought that it wouldn't hurt to ask God what I should do. The answer I got was, "Be a teacher." OK.

I am a teacher. I love to teach. Even though I thought I would be a High School teacher, God still had other plans. I taught Middle School. The crazy thing about this is that one of my students is now a close friend!
Then I took an even bigger leap. I taught kindergarten for 3 years. I think it may be the best age to teach.

At two years of age, Mr. Smackdown had a mommy that was already preparing for school. Now that he is 4, I am in heaven. We are almost to kindergarten! I am loving teaching him to read, think creatively, learn to write, and count.
However, there is another individual in our house who doesn't have quite the attention span, but wants to be like big brother. What makes it worse is that this Little Man (AKA Mr. Easy) is quite passionate about his desire to participate. Like his birthday, he gets fired up and hot like a firecracker to do school and then his attention fizzles out into thin air. The solution?

Tot School or Tot Time! It is great fun and I am so thankful for the idea from a fellow blogger of 1 + 1 + 1 = 1. Here is what Carisa has to say about the purpose of Tot School:

Tot School is nothing more than intentionally providing your tot with
age appropriate activities that are fun and engaging. By choosing specific
toys and activities, we expose our tots to a variety of early learning
skills. Mastery is not the goal, FUN is!

I think that Mr. Smackdown enjoys Tot Time even more than the Tot in our house! Most mornings, after quiet times, we come downstairs and have Tot School. Because Tot Time is short, we can usually do it while Mr. Smiley takes his morning nap or crawls around.
What does Tot Time look like? Well, here is what we did yesterday.

We read a story about a little boy who didn't obey his parents and subsequently fell into a manure pile (the boys enjoyed saying "poop," as did their Grandma). As a result the boy learns that children should obey their parents because God tells us to and it offers protection. Then they colored and glued on some textured items to the picture of the little boy. I don't know if they learned a lesson, but it was fun to talk about who poops.

Mr. Easy is very intent on using his pencil correctly.

Big Brother, Mr. Smackdown, enjoys getting to use markers for Tot Time.

Mr. Easy separated "squishy" and "hard" items.

I Got Sick and this is What I Learned

My list of ways to go "Organic on the Cheap" includes said title, Don't get Sick. The irony is that we have just spent three miserable weeks being sick. Before our experiment with sickness, I was going to counsel you on the ways to be "healthy." Oh, doesn't that sound self-righteous!

Looking back, I see how haughty my thinking was. As my mother-in-law would say, "What are you? Crazy!?" I have been reminded and clearly see that my life is not always mine to direct and control. In fact, I believe the Bible even says, "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body" (1 Corinthians 6:19, 20).

Though the past few weeks have been difficult, I don't think that I would erase them from our family history. I have learned some really good lessons from God. I sometimes think that He almost allows sickness for the purpose of getting us to slow down and rest. The crazy thing is that though my actual times of Bible reading or purposeful "quiet times" have almost been erased from my life recently, I have heard the Lord's voice in my ear quite frequently. So what have I learned?

1. It is OK to prop my feet up and watch Curious George and Clifford with my children. It allows for great conversation and cuddling. My kids smiled with delight that I stopped what I was doing and joined them in their misery.

2. It is OK to let your kids watch TV (with some parental advisory, of course).

3. I need to lighten up and nurture more. This means turning butternut squash from our food coop into a VeggieTale Hero that is also sick. Creating letters with their food. Giving them silly things to drink out of. Having random moments of fun. Learning to not be irritated at their complaining, but using it to have silly conversation and create a song. Giving kisses and hugs and pulling them onto my lap. Why isn't this natural for me?

4. Eat to live. Not live to eat. By myself getting sick, I wasn't consumed with my next meal or snack. I used food to get healthy and aide my body in healing. Food isn't to be our comfort. Isaiah 66:13 says, "As one whom his mother comforts, So I [God] will comfort you."

5. Avoid sugar. I have heard it said that the immune system is suppressed for 6 hours after eating sugar. Guess what I had been doing the week before?

6. Use Thieves Essential Oil regularly on my feet. What is Thieves, you ask? Well, that will be for another post. But in a nutshell, by using it daily you boost your immune system.

7. Take probiotics again!

8. Go to bed by 10 PM, at the latest.

9. Exercise!

10. Get rid of extra stuff in my life. What is a must? God, Hubby, kids. Healthy eating and my slightly time intensive cooking are staying. Blogging and Gardening still bring joy. What must go? My business of sewing.

God gave me a gentle wake up call, reminding me that I had misplaced a few priorities and it was time to readjust. Thankfully, I am more than willing to listen, even if it ended in antibiotics!

What is something that you want to learn about?

I have a gazillion things that I personally would like to write about, but the words simply aren't coming. I am passionate about many things and sometimes get flustered in the activity of all that I am cataloging in my brain to learn about, try, or throw away. So I came up with an idea to get my creative juices flowing. I want to know what would you, my reader, would like to learn about. This can be something that I could blog about for you or would allow me to hear about your dreams and passions. Here are some ideas, a sampling of things that I still would like to learn more about:

1. how to achieve consistent home organization
2. using biblical essential oils
3. creating a wide readership of my blog
4. healing my thyroid
5. techniques to maintain Bible memorization
6. growing big yellow onions and hearty carrots
7. Greek
8. interesting, healthy, sprouted, fresh lunches that my children will eat
9. harvesting and storing seeds from my garden to plant the following year
10. read music and play the guitar

So leave a comment and let me know what you would like to learn about. Tell a friend and have them leave a list. Better yet, become a follower and I will be sure to blog about one of your learning dreams!
