Happy Birthday, Jesus

Our family has chosen to host an intimate birthday party for Jesus, though we know that December 25th is not His actual birthday.

DSC_0013

We invite you to join us.  To make Christmas meaningful.  Different.  Reflective . . . but fun.

A extraordinary wonder . . . a delightful memory that beckons your children and your heart to be inclined towards the star . . . leading you on a journey to the Savior.

Read the Christmas Story.  Be a part of the Christmas Story.  It’s written for me . . . for you . . . for the world.

A party.

A birthday party for a Savior.

Join me over at Sharing the Journey to read about our very special birthday cake.

Here is a sneak peak:

Christmas is the one day of the year when our children restrain themselves and stay in bed longer than us.  They wait.  Their mouths salivate.  There is much anticipation.

This one day . . . the only day out of the year, they are served breakfast in bed.  And it isn’t just any ordinary breakfast.

They are treated to wholesome cake . . . at 7 AM.  Birthday cake.

Happy Birthday, Ruth

We have two one year olds in our house.

One is precious.  Delightful and obedient.  Full of smiles.

DSC_0038

The other?

Brown.  Ever shedding.  A counter surfer.  Her mouth – always open.  We joke that if she were a missionary, she would bite people with the Gospel.

DSC_0136

I can’t understand why she won’t cooperate.

It’s just a hat.

DSC_0138

Maybe she’s shy.

DSC_0139

Seriously Ruth?  Please cooperate.

DSC_0141

Happy Birthday, Ruth.

Your birthday present?  We will let you sleep in our bed tonight.

Oh wait.  You sneak up there each night anyway.

P.S. This post was lovingly written by myself along with the help of three very funny little boys.

One Whole Year

I greeted October 18th with a roar from deep within.  Last year. My voluminous thundering brought forth life.

DSC_0088

Without anyone being present but the Lord, the Engineer, and myself.  Not quite what we had in mind.   However, it was the reality.

DSC_0089

I sit here slightly incredulous.

One whole year?

DSC_0085(Your first unpasteurized, unfermented leche)

You are still like a little flower petal unfolding, revealing each intricate layer of how carefully the Lord crafted you.  And it is delightful.  Precious.

DSC_0025

Naomi Torah your name fits you so well.  Your name . . . Pleasant Word . . . you fill that name till it overflows and can’t contain the overflowing well of joy that you bring us.

Happy Birthday, sweet baby girl.

5 Years Old

Once upon a time, he was Pat.

Then, we saw a picture . . . and he had a name only known to the Engineer and I.

Ezra.

DSC_0020

That little secret entered the world like a firecracker through a tunnel to became Baby Ezer.

He began to talk.

We renamed him Mr. Me-Too.

DSC_0031

One day, he decided he could make decisions.  He became self-titled, Honey Sir Ezra.

Shortly before turning 5, our Ezra gained yet another name.

Hüsker Dü.  The name actually means, “Do you remember?”

However, when the Engineer renamed Ezra, he didn’t know what it meant . . . only that it was cute and Ezra’s face lit up with this endearing name.  But really the name works.  Because Ezra loves to talk about things that he remembers . . . or we remember.

Like his birth.

Which is what we are celebrating today.

DSC_0037

Five years ago today I gave birth and celebrated not only our country’s birth, but my son’s.  I didn’t see fireworks that night from our hospital room, but he has been such a bright spot in our life . . . that who needs fireworks when he is around.

Honey Sir Hüsker Dü Ezra, I love you.  Thank you for your precious hugs.  Your snuggles.  The times you knock me down on my knees with the passion of your love.  I love your imagination . . . the creativity in your stories . . . how you make Toy Story become real in my eyes . . . and your new passion to eat words with your eyes.

Happy birthday!

Mr. Smiley is Three

A celebration in pictures . . . mostly.

Breakfast . . .

010

Coconut flour waffles with maple syrup from Ohio and blackberries, if you must know.

Lunch . . . no pictures . . . . but he requested beef hotdogs.

Really?

Almond pie crust made by Nana . . .

019

and filled with tomato asparagus quiche.

023

Yes, I made my 3 year old quiche for his birthday.  It seemed a little weird to me . . . but if he likes it, why not?

Feed me, Mommy!

020

Hold on, buddy!  I need to finish your birthday cake!

Creating powdered sugar from evaporated cane juice,

024

while the cake waits patiently for its pristine white coat.

030

Hold everything, Mama and Papa are on the red phone!

033

Finally . . . .

039

Followed by quite possibly the best chocolate cake I have EVER made . . . maybe eaten (thank you Tropical Traditions).

and topped off with Wahoo, the nicest dog we own!

Happy 3 Months!

It is so appropriate that today my little girl learned how to flip from her belly to her back.  And she was none too happy about her new found strength.

Three months . . . I can not believe how fast time is flying by.

011

Already . . . Naomi’s newborn cry is gone.  As are the little mouth clicks . . . sighs . . . gurgles.

However, they have been replaced with bright smiles and delicious laughs and warm snuggles that feel like hugs.

052

And . . . she has found her hand.  Not her thumb.  Her entire hand.

Honesty, I Guess

Everything is done.  Except this blog post.

sweet pea's room 042

OK, Hottie.  You were right.  I did have one more thing to cross off of my list before Sweet Pea is born.  And I am accomplishing it right now.

There is a thing called honesty that must be dealt with before all of my children are born.  I may sound all brave and adventurous, or maybe even stupid to some of you for

1) having all of our children naturally, and

2) having two of our children at home.

I must admit I thrive on being different, going against the grain.  But honestly, I feel that naturally and at home are the safest places.  That however, is not what I wish to touch upon today.

sweet pea's room 035

To endeavor to accomplish such a task as is before the Hottie and I in the upcoming days, honesty is required.  A reality check.

For years, the idea of birth has evoked fear in my imaginative brain.  I once looked at pregnancy and birth as a medical condition, almost a sickness.  At times a battle still wages in my mind that this whole idea of growing a baby inside of me is somehow a disease and will most likely end in failure.  Chances are that something will go wrong and I will die.  It is a laborious curse thrust upon us as the result of Eve’s treachery.  It is something we must endure and even try to numb or dull.  Where does that image come from . . . I suppose the media and even the medical profession.  The hoopla surrounding the nine months that God grows your child is medicalized, almost impersonal.

sweet pea's room 030

We look at this miraculous process clinically instead of a gift, artwork in action, the ultimate sculpting and artistry, a rite of passage, a legacy passed down from one generation of women to another.

And as I battle my former perception of childbirth I am also reminded almost daily of my own imperfections as a mother, and I question why on earth the Lord would have me train up another precious individual, when I lack the self-control I am so desperately trying to instill in my offspring.

sweet pea's room 037

I’ve yelled this week.  I’ve thrown a few books in a miniature temper tantrum.  I have sighed.  I have lectured five minutes too long.  I have grumbled and complained.

Yet, no matter how I have screwed up this week, Sweet Pea is still coming.  I can’t change that fact.  In a few days, maybe hours, our family will be forever changed.

And that scares me.  Change.

sweet pea's room 031

I get scared that this delivery will be harder than the previous three.  I’m worried about my carpeting.  What if the bed skirt my mom sewed gets a stain on it?  What if I puke . . . or worse (some of you ladies know what I mean)?  What if the Hottie can’t get home in time because of traffic?  How shall we handle the birth-day party?  What if my neck is still pinched when I go into labor?  What if my water breaks at the vet today?  Why on earth did my dog have to get a bladder infection before the baby was to arrive?  Is it OK that I don’t have my traditional tea party at Helio’s?  I still want to get a pedicure.

Those are some of my thoughts . . . rational and and unreasonable (some of them).  But I am giving you honesty.  To move through something, you have to process.

No one climbs Mt. Everest by wishing they were at the top.  Mountaineers have to prepare and work, burn some calories--win the mental game.

To fight the mental game, I got up shortly after the Hottie this AM and read my Bible.  Knocked off two days in my B90x  B100x plan.  (Four more days of reading to go.)

As I turned into a prune, I soaked up God’s word and was fortified for this new adventure.  To have this baby, I have felt that it was imperative that I gird my mind to raise a homemaker, a pleasant girl who loved the Lord and had a gracious spirit (which is why I began reading the Bible in 90 days).

But how can I bless my baby girl when I am really the opposite of all the gifts that I desire the Lord to bestow upon her?  I am blunt, often too honest, a seeker of a good laugh, critical, an open book, a devourer of food, quick to judge, and sometimes lazy.

Only through the transforming work of the Holy Spirit is how . . .

  • “For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.”  (2 Corinthians 2:15)
  • “But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.  Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.  And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”  (2 Corinthians 3:16-17)
  • “Now it is God who has made us for this VERY purpose and has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.” (2 Corinthians 5:5)
  • “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9)
  • “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”  (Galatians 5: 22,23)
  • And oh, I so want this to come to pass in my life so as not to pass it down to Sweet Pea, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building other us according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen .  . . Get rid of all bitterness, rage, and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.  Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”  (Ephesians 4: 29, 31, 32)
  • “Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men” (Ephesians 6:7)

I really could go on.  Almost all of Philippians, Colossians 3, and 1 Thessalonians are underlined (and water stained!)  But I need to get the dog ready.

Honesty.  The birth is coming.  I’m not slamming myself against a wall in condemnation.  I’m being honest.  Instead of reviewing a book, I am reviewing myself for a change.  I have to face the future.  Childbirth and motherhood are hard work.  So are other things, for that matter.

I needed to get right with God this morning.  I may have some more pruning to do.

But I feel better now.

Happy Birthday, Mom!

Today is my mom's birthday.

This is what we got her for lunch.  Though it felt like a sugar fest, it was, at least, mostly organic.  That has to count for something, right?

I think birthdays are BIG deals.  Heck, it is the day that God's miracle is revealed from a very small place.  It makes me want to give my Grandma Jean a bear hug for allowing God to use her to make my mom.  A birthday is the day that God launches His most recent masterpiece.  It is a day to celebrate life.

So we celebrated.  I think Mr. Smily celebrated a little too much.

And my mom was auditioning for the Got Milk ad campaign to make the boys feel a little bit better about their mustaches.

To celebrate my mom's life, the boys entertained her with aspirations of becoming a pirate, with the expert guidance of my fabulous Mother's Helper, who will be given the name, Ruth.

And Mr. Smiley was content to have Mom push is bottom up the tunnel.
Happy Birthday, Mom.  I'm so glad that God made you and we got to spend time with you on your special day!

Every 4th of July is a Party

I know what I am going to be doing every 4th of July for approximately the next 15 years or so.

I will be celebrating Mr. Me-Too's birthday.

It really is a great day to have a birthday. Most everyone has the day off, and there is always a party going on. The day is completed with hundreds of heavenly candles lighting up the sky.

Mr. Me-Too helped prepare for his party. This was his first time to lick the batter. We made 60 slightly altered, healthy cupcakes with cream cheese icing.
His Mama and Papa gave him a horse for his swing set. Upon opening his trusty stead, he exclaimed, "Look at 'dat!" However, he had no idea what it was at the time--only that it was red.
For breakfast, he enjoyed his cupcake. It was his birthday. We decided to live large.
My favorite present that we gave him, was this great stacking/sorting/pattern making wood toy from Melissa and Doug. All three of the boys have really enjoyed playing with it. It doesn't hurt that it is educational, at the same time! Shh! Don't tell them that!
And this . . . is all of our family and our home fellowship. We served brunch, complete with whole wheat pancakes, organic strawberry sauce, maple syrup, egg casserole, skillet potatoes, and turkey sausage. The logistics of serving that many people pancakes was a tad bit frightening. But thankfully, I borrowed 3 griddles and it went quick. I believe we cooked over 100 pancakes!
The birthday boy was very happy with his meal.
His Nana and Mops got him a Flying Turtle. Way fun toy. It requires kid batteries and those you can recharge with a good night's sleep and healthy food!

Happy Birthday, my precious firecracker 3 year old! I love you!
